💸 RM4.9 Billion ‘Wang Ehsan’ for East Coast States

The Malaysian government has disbursed RM4 billion to Terengganu and RM967 million to Kelantan in the form of ‘wang ehsan’ or compassionate funds between 2023 and 2025. The Finance Ministry clarified that the funds were used to support emoluments, infrastructure projects, and poverty eradication programs in the two states.

Notably, the ministry reiterated that no petroleum resources have been discovered within the three-nautical-mile territorial waters of either state—making them ineligible for direct oil royalties under the Territorial Sea Act 2012 (Act 750).

The funds were allocated exclusively to Kelantan and Terengganu and channeled through federal agencies such as the Implementation Coordination Unit and the Public Works Department.

🩺 90% of Insurance Premium Hikes Below 10%

The Finance Ministry reported that over 90% of recent insurance premium adjustments were under 10%, despite widespread concern. This comes amid growing pressure over rising Medical and Health Insurance and Takaful (MHIT) premiums, driven by:

  • Post-pandemic surge in medical claims
  • Rising non-communicable disease rates
  • High costs of advanced medical technologies

The government is now developing a basic MHIT product to address affordability, expected to launch by end-2026 under the Reset strategy.

🛢️ Oil Prices Flat as Oversupply Concerns Mount

Global oil prices remain stagnant after a three-day decline, with Brent crude holding at US$68.76 per barrel. The market is reacting to OPEC+’s decision to boost production by 547,000 barrels per day in September—a move that could flood the market.

Meanwhile, geopolitical tension is brewing as the U.S. pressures India to cut Russian oil imports, potentially triggering more supply disruptions. Analysts warn that U.S. tariffs on Russian crude could cause ripple effects on global fuel demand.

💊 Trump’s Tariff Threat Triggers $250B in Pharma Investments

Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed push for drug import tariffs has led to a wave of new investments in U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturing:

  • AstraZeneca: $50B
  • Johnson & Johnson: $55B
  • Eli Lilly: $27B
  • Hikma & Amphastar: Expansion in sterile injectables

While the White House calls it a win for national security, experts caution that reshoring won’t necessarily reduce U.S. dependence on foreign drug ingredients—or lower prices for consumers.
