AGN Afternoon Update | 7 April 2025
By Alps Global News
As global economic and geopolitical tensions continue to rise, today’s AGN Afternoon Update brings you three critical developments from Malaysia, Europe, and East Asia. From Malaysia’s measured response to new U.S. tariffs, to Elon Musk’s call for transatlantic free trade, and China’s intensifying pressure on Taiwan, here’s what you need to know.
🇲🇾 Malaysia Stays Calm Amid Trump’s Tariff Surge
Malaysia is urging calm and strategic dialogue following U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest announcement of a 24% reciprocal tariff on Malaysian goods.
Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, addressed the issue after a pre-meeting session for the upcoming ASEAN Finance Ministers Meeting. He emphasized that there is “no need to panic,” and stated that Malaysia is currently assessing the long-term impact of the tariffs, especially on inflation, industry competitiveness, and bilateral trade relations.
Amir Hamzah added that Malaysia would continue constructive discussions with U.S. officials and regional partners. The upcoming ASEAN gatherings — including finance, trade, and leadership summits — are expected to play a key role in crafting a coordinated regional response.
Meanwhile, Bank Negara Malaysia projects that domestic inflation will remain between 2.0% and 3.5% in 2025, with the impact of the tariffs expected to be temporary and manageable. Malaysia’s GDP growth is forecast at up to 5.5% this year, largely driven by domestic demand and targeted subsidy reforms.
🇺🇸 Elon Musk Advocates for US-EU Free Trade Zone
At an international political congress in Florence, Italy, Elon Musk made headlines by calling for the complete removal of tariffs between the United States and Europe.
Appearing via video, Musk stated his hope for a “zero-tariff, zero-barrier” transatlantic trade zone, arguing that both goods and people should move freely between the continents. “Someone should be able to work in Italy or the US without needing a visa,” he said.
His remarks come as the U.S. enforces new tariffs, including a 20% duty on Italian exports, as part of President Trump’s broader protectionist trade strategy.
Notably, Musk’s comments aligned him with several far-right political factions in Europe, including Italy’s League Party and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni — a move that has drawn both political praise and criticism.
🇨🇳 China Intensifies Taiwan Encirclement in ‘Strait Thunder-2025A’
In a significant escalation, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) launched a large-scale military operation around Taiwan over the weekend, code-named “Strait Thunder-2025A.”
The operation includes the deployment of the aircraft carrier Shandong, alongside 19 warships and dozens of military aircraft. Simulated blockades, aerial incursions, and live-fire drills were conducted, sending a powerful message about China’s readiness to exert pressure on the self-governed island.
According to military analysts, the exercise marks a strategic shift from sporadic provocations to systematic pressure campaigns, with a strong emphasis on psychological warfare. China also released propaganda posters combining nationalist messaging with images of military might, aimed at intimidating both Taiwan’s public and leadership.
This escalation coincides with President Trump’s return to office, prompting analysts to interpret the move as a test of Washington’s resolve and foreign policy posture.
